General Information:

The SWA-400 subwoofer amplifier delivers clean, solid power required to drive medium to large sized subwoofer speakers. Its compact 1U design is compatible with many other popular electronic devices and different styles of multimedia gear. The SWA-400 is engineered to provide high fidelity bass amplification and is tailored for home audio and home theater audio systems. User defined presets give you complete control over crossover frequency, as well as slope, phase, and low-cut. Recall your presets for the type of listening you are doing. Short circuit and thermal protection circuits are built-in.

Master Volume:Sets the overall subwoofer output in relation to the main speakers. Values range from -9dB to +9dB, selectable in 3dB increments. The volume should be set to achieve an even balance between full-range program and subwoofer output.

Preset Choose:Selects one of 3 presets. Preset 1 is optimized for 8" in-wall subs, Preset 2 is optimized for 10" in-wall subs, and preset 3 is optimized for 12" subs.

Crossover Frequency:Selects the highest frequency cut-off point to the subwoofer. If you are using larger main speakers use lower frequencies below 100Hz. A smaller main speaker will require more reinforcement from the subwoofer, so the crossover should be set to higher frequencies above 100Hz. A good starting place is the lower limit of the frequency response of the main speakers.

Crossover Slope:Also known as roll-off, the slope refers to how abruptly the high frequencies are cut off. The SWA-400 offers 4 slopes from -12dB to -48dB. This setting refers to how many decibels above the selected Crossover Freq are attenuated (turned down) per octave. A gradual slope of -12dB allows more bleed of higher frequencies to pass through the subwoofer. This is useful with smaller or cheaper main speakers that are less efficient at reproducing bass. Higher slopes are more effective when used with high efficiency and bigger main speakers that do produce sufficient bass.

Phase:This puts a slight delay on the signal sent to your subwoofer. Since the main amplifier drives the main speakers with full-range sound, the main speakers are reproducing bass frequencies along with the sub. If you have a front firing sub that is in the same plane as the mains, then the phase can be set to 0. Down-firing, rear-ported, or subs placed away from the mains will smear the bass tones and the frequencies will cancel each other out as they bounce around the room. Try different settings and walk around your listening area for the optimum setting.

Low-Cut:Selects the lowest frequency that the amp will reproduce. This is useful for smaller subs, 10" and below. Since smaller speakers cannot reproduce extreme low frequencies, it is best to limit the system to what they can reproduce. This will maximize the efficiency of the subwoofer system and minimize over-extension and speaker failure. Please check with your subwoofer manufacture's manual and specs for speaker limitations.

Mode Select:Selects between Sub and LFE modes. The Sub setting is the normal operating mode for the SWA-400. LFE mode bypasses the Crossover Freq function of the SWA-400. Use this mode if you are connecting the SWA-400 to the LFE output of your amplifier or AV receiver.

Auto Standby:If no audio signal is present for an extended period of time, the SWA-400 can be switched into standby mode to conserve electricity. Choose from 5-30 minutes in 5 minute increments or turn the function off.

The idea is simple enough: A home theater provides a theater-like experience in your home. But what exactly does that entail? The quick answer is, there's no quick answer. A home theater can be as simple as a few AV devices in your living room or as complex as a completely renovated basement designed to look like a Hollywood Movie Theater. At its core, a home theater system should provide a high-quality video experience and an immersive audio experience that breathe life into your favorite movies, but a number of roads can lead to that destination. This primer offers a general overview of the basic home theater ingredients--from the AV equipment to the seating to the other room elements that can shape your perfect home theater.

Picking the Right Display for Your Home Theater System
When you envision a theater-like video experience, you probably think first of a projection system and a large screen TV. That's certainly the display of choice in the prototypical home theater.

As for the projection screen, you can choose between fixed-frame, pull-up/-down, or motorized screens, and most screen manufacturers offer a wide variety of screen materials to suit different projectors and environments. You also need to think about what screen shape you want: Do you want a standard 16:9 screen that's perfect for HDTV and many movies or a 2.35:1 screen that lets you watch CinemaScope movies with no black bars (this requires a suitably equipped projector and sometimes an add-on lens).

Of course, the two-piece projection system isn't the only option in the display realm. Flat-panel TVs are pretty much the driving force in the home entertainment marketplace. Smart TV, LED, OLED. 4K. HDR. The world of TVs is looking better every day, but also more confusing. Today, there's a wide array of high-definition (HD) and 4K Ultra HD sets to choose from, from bargain big screens to high-end displays that can cost as much as a car.

Home Theater Speaker Systems (5.1, 7.1 and more) The other main element that makes a trip to the movie theater so memorable is the enveloping audio, in which sound elements come at you from all directions. At home, the most basic surround sound speaker system consists of 5.1 channels. The "5" stands for speakers in the front left, center, front right, rear right, and rear left positions, while the ".1" belongs to a subwoofer that helps flesh out the bass for explosions and other low-end effects. Some home theater installers recommend the use of multiple subwoofers to help deliver smoother bass response across a wider listening area. Most higher end surround systems use dedicated Pre-Amps, amplifiers and or receivers. These can be connected to In-ceiling speakers, In-wall speakers, Floor Standing speakers and of course Subwoofers.

CompSource also makes it easy with Home Theater Systems in a box. While these may not be as robust as a dedicated system they still sound great for many home users with limited budgets or not interested in as elaborate of a theater system.

If a home theater system is just a bit much, you can always consider a Sound Bar. Sound Bars include a speaker that has a left, center and right speaker as well as a sub woofer. Often times they have wireless speaker options as well and typically can be installed with little effort from the home owner.
